Laptop or cloud: where to run agents

Run an AI agent on your laptop for short tasks you watch. Run it in the cloud for long jobs, for work that must finish while you are away, and for anything that should stay away from your own files. A laptop costs nothing extra and is fast for one task; a cloud computer keeps working when you close the lid.

for a quick task you watch, work offline, and files that only exist on your machine.
Take a cloud computer
when the job takes hours, must finish with the lid closed, or needs a place where mistakes cannot reach your files.

When the lid closes

Two timelines: on a laptop the agent stops when the lid closes; on a cloud computer it keeps working, then sleeps with memory kept You close the lid You open the laptop On your laptop Agent working Stopped: the laptop sleeps Picks up again On a cloud computer Agent working, the lid does not matter Asleep · memory kept The job finishes Idle for 10 minutes, then it sleeps The first request wakes it
The agent runs on the computer, not on your laptop. With the cloud, your laptop is only a window to it.

A laptop that goes to sleep stops its programs, and an agent in the middle of a build stops with them. On a cloud computer the agent keeps working when the laptop is closed. You come back to a finished result, from any browser.

Your files and your mistakes

An agent on your laptop works as you. It can read your documents, use your browser logins and delete files. Most of the time that is fine. Once in a while a wrong command is not.

On a cloud computer the agent sees only what you put there. A wrong step costs you a reset of that computer, not your photos or your work folder. Keep real secrets off it, and move files you want to keep to cloud storage.

Is the cloud slower?

For one task at a time, a recent MacBook core is faster than one of ours, as the table shows. For many things at once it is close: a Uno computer with 8 vCPU scores about like a MacBook Air M2, and one with 16 vCPU about like a MacBook Air M4, in multi-core Geekbench.

A second MacBook in the cloud, for $70 a month

Pro gives you 16 vCPU and 16 GB: the speed of a MacBook Air M4 that keeps working while your own laptop is closed.

Your agent gets a clean address of its own

Your computer runs in the Netherlands. Its traffic can leave through a static address of a regular internet provider in one of 8 countries. Only your account works from that address.

Clean exit IP Your own address a regular internet provider, not a data center

What the agent opens Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub and any site its browser visits
From a data-center address
Sites see a server range shared with thousands of strangers. The agent's browser hits more captchas and blocks.
From your Clean exit IP
Sites see a regular internet provider's address in the country you picked. Fewer captchas, and less reason for Claude or ChatGPT to flag your account: nobody else works from it.

Where the cloud is worse

  • One task at a time, your MacBook is faster. Geekbench 6 single-core is 2,049 on an Uno computer and about 2600 on a MacBook Air M2.
  • It needs the internet. A laptop works on a plane.
  • Your files are not there. You upload them or work from cloud storage, which is one more step.
  • It costs money, from $5 a month. Your laptop is already paid for.
  • Our vCPU are shared, not dedicated, and there is one region for paid plans today: the Netherlands.
