How it works
Every IP address belongs to a network with a number (ASN), and databases label each network as a hosting company, a home internet provider or a mobile carrier. A server's address gives itself away.
A residential proxy takes the other road. A residential address is assigned by an internet provider to a home connection, and the traffic goes through a real home device. You send your request to the proxy, it picks an address from its pool, and the site answers the household, not you.
$ curl -x http://USER:PASS@HOST:PORT https://api.ipify.org 203.0.113.57 # the home address, not yours $ curl -x http://USER:PASS@HOST:PORT https://api.ipify.org 198.51.100.14 # a new request, a new address
Most providers offer two modes. Rotating gives a new address with every request. Sticky keeps the same address for a set time, from minutes to hours. Billing is usually per gigabyte, because each byte runs over someone's home line.
A third kind sits between the two. An ISP proxy, or static residential, is an address registered to an internet provider but hosted in a data center, and it stays fixed. It reads as a provider address, and it does not run through a household device.
Where the pool comes from matters. Residential pools are built from home devices whose owners agreed to share their connection, usually inside an app; how clearly they agreed differs between providers. Ask a provider how its owners agree before you pay.
Do you need one?
Take a residential proxy when
- You send many requests from many addresses. Collecting public pages, checking prices.
- You test from another country. What does this page show in Germany or Japan?
- A site blocks every server address. Residential addresses pass where a data-center range does not.
Skip it when
- You need one steady identity. A rotating address looks like a different person each time. Take one static address.
- You move a lot of data. Per-gigabyte billing adds up fast on video and downloads.
- The site offers an API. The API is allowed and does not need a disguise.
The trade-off: a residential proxy gets past address checks, and it adds a stranger's connection between you and the site. It does not change your login, your cookies or the rules of the site.
The short way: a steady address for your agent
Most agents do not need a pool. They need one address that is not a server range. Clean exit IP is a static address of a regular internet provider, used by one account only. It is not residential and not rotating: it stays the same, in one of 8 countries.

How an Uno computer gets a clean address
Your computer runs in the Netherlands. Its traffic can leave through a static address of a regular internet provider in one of 8 countries. Only your account works from that address.
- From a data-center address
- Sites see a server range shared with thousands of strangers. The agent's browser hits more captchas and blocks.
- From your Clean exit IP
- Sites see a regular internet provider's address in the country you picked. Fewer captchas, and less reason for Claude or ChatGPT to flag your account: nobody else works from it.
What Uno sells instead: a server with a clean address
Uno does not sell a pool by the gigabyte. It sells a computer whose traffic leaves through a clean address. The address comes from Uno's own IP network, and we control abuse on it: that is what keeps it clean. The address is yours alone, it stays the same, and you switch it on in Settings, then Network, in Uno Work and the console. See Clean exit IP.
