Snapshot vs backup

A snapshot is a point-in-time copy of a machine's state, usually kept on the same system, quick to take and quick to return to. A backup is a copy kept somewhere else, so you can recover when the machine or its server is gone. Uno has both: a sleep snapshot that lets a computer wake with its programs running, and a daily copy of the disk kept 7 days off the server.

Count on a snapshot for
going back a few minutes, waking a machine where it stopped, or trying a risky step and undoing it.
Count on a backup for
a dead server, a deleted volume, a bad deploy found two days later, or an account problem.

Uno columns from how Uno works, checked 16 October 2026. The two general columns describe the common case; hosts differ, as the next table shows.
On the server that runs your computer, a sleep snapshot of memory and disk is made each time it falls asleep. Once a day a copy of the disk leaves the server and is kept 7 days The server that runs your computer Your computer Disk, memory, running programs asleep Sleep snapshot Memory and disk of one moment Used to wake up, not to go back Daily copy The disk · locked Kept 7 days, off the server once a day, out of the server
The sleep snapshot stays with the computer and only helps it wake. The daily copy leaves the server, and that is what makes it a backup.

What other places call them

Names and rules change from host to host. Five, checked on 16 October 2026:

Hetzner CloudMade by hand: a copy of a server's diskHetzner Cloud makes backups automatically every day and keeps up to seven; when the limit is reached the oldest is deleted
DigitalOceanDigitalOcean charges snapshots by size, per GB a month: $0.06 per GB a month, so $1.50 for 25 GBDigitalOcean's basic backup plans add 20% of the Droplet's price for weekly copies and 30% for daily ones
Fly SpritesA checkpoint: a copy-on-write snapshot of the writable filesystem, taken without stopping the Sprite; it does not capture memory or processes. the last five are mounted read-onlyNo separate backup product on the pages we read
Modal SandboxesFilesystem snapshots stay 30 days, memory snapshots 7 days. Taking a snapshot ends the sandbox, and open TCP connections close and have to be opened againNo separate backup product on the pages we read
Morph CloudHolds the whole state of a running instance, memory and disk, with its running processes and servicesNo separate backup product on the pages we read
UnoMade each time the computer falls asleep: memory and disk of that momentA copy of the disk once a day on every paid plan, kept 7 days
From each vendor's docs and pricing pages. Sandbox services sell snapshots as the way to keep state; servers sell backups as the way to recover from loss.

How long a saved state is kept

Days a copy stays before it is removed. Uno's sleep snapshot is not on the chart: it lasts while the computer sleeps.

Which one saves you from what

What went wrongSnapshotBackup
You deleted the wrong folder a minute agoif you took one just beforeonly as old as the last copy
The server's disk diedusually dies with itrestores on a new server
A bad deploy, noticed two days lateronly if you kept an old oneif the copy is old enough
You want the machine to resume where it stoppedif it holds memorystarts from the disk, programs begin again

On Uno the sleep snapshot answers the fourth row and the daily copy answers the second and third. Open the Backups tab on the computer's page. Restore as new makes a new computer from a copy and leaves the current one as it is.

Where Uno is worse

  • The daily copy comes once a day, so you can lose up to a day of changes: no hourly copies.
  • A copy holds the disk only. A restored computer boots from the copied disk, so its programs start again.
  • Once a computer is deleted, its daily copies can no longer be restored. Restore as new first if you need something.
  • Copies count against your cloud storage, and the new computer made by a restore has to fit in your plan.
  • Morph snapshots a running VM, memory included, whenever you ask. A Uno copy is the disk, taken once a day.
  • Uno Work does not show the copies yet, only the console does.
