Daily copies and snapshots

On every paid plan, Uno copies your computer's disk once a day and keeps each copy for 7 days. The copies live off the server that runs your computer, and one button turns any of them into a new computer.

Your computer is copied once a day, the copies are kept 7 days off the server, and a copy restores into a new computer Your computer The disk: code, files, packages, databases once a day Daily copies Off the server · locked · kept 7 days oldest, then removed today restore New computer Boots from the copy. The old one stays. Sleep snapshot Memory and disk of one moment, on the same server. It is for waking up, not for going back.
Copies leave the server and wait for 7 days. The sleep snapshot stays with the computer and only helps it wake.

What happens once a day

Uno asks the computer to write everything pending to disk, then copies the whole disk out of the server. In short: every computer on a paid plan gets a copy of its disk once a day, on by default. A copy older than 7 days is removed, and its space comes back to you.

Sleep does not skip it: a sleeping or stopped computer gets its copy too, so a bot that sleeps most of the day is covered. On the computer's page in the console you see the time of the daily copy in your own time zone, when the last one was made and how much space the copies take.

Copies count toward your cloud storage. If it fills up, the daily copy is still made and only your own uploads stop: your protection never switches off quietly.

What happens when you need one back

Open the Backups tab and press Restore as new. Uno makes a new computer from that copy and leaves the current one as it is, so you can compare the two and keep the right one. The new computer has to fit in your plan.

Over the API you can also restore in place: the computer stops, its disk is replaced with the copy, and it starts again.

Uno API
# copies of computer 42
$ curl -s https://console.uno.place/api/v1/boxes/42/backups \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer $UNO_API_KEY"
# copy 1001 into a new computer; always pass the mode
$ curl -s -X POST https://console.uno.place/api/v1/backups/1001/restore \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer $UNO_API_KEY" \
    -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"mode":"new_box"}'

Pass the mode every time: without one, the API restores in place. A restored computer boots from the copied disk, so your programs start again from the beginning.

Why a copy cannot be wiped

A daily copy is locked for 7 days once it is written, and a copy you make yourself for 30. Until the lock ends, nobody can delete or overwrite it, Uno included.

The server that runs your computer holds no key to the copies. It can upload the one copy it was asked for, and cannot read, delete or replace any other. If that server were ever broken into, yesterday's copy would still be there.

What a snapshot is, and why it is not a copy

Each time your computer falls asleep, Uno saves its memory together with the disk from the same moment. That is why it wakes with every program running. If the saved pair is incomplete, the computer starts from its working disk instead of mixing memory with a different moment.

Copies are on by default. Turn them off, or pick the time and the days to keep, on the computer's page in the console.

What it does not do

  • No hourly copies. You can lose up to a day of changes, so make your own copy before a risky change.
  • Memory and running programs are not part of a copy. A restored computer starts them again.
  • Once you delete a computer, its daily copies can no longer be restored. Restore as new first if you need something.
  • Restore as new needs room in your plan for one more computer.
  • Uno Work does not show the copies yet. Find them in the console, on the computer's page.
