How much an AI agent costs a month, counted in tokens

A coding agent that does 200 tasks a month costs from $9 to $945 in API tokens, depending on the model. One task is about 1.53 million tokens, and almost all of them are the agent reading its own context again.

The prices are the list prices of Anthropic and OpenAI on 16 October 2026. The usage is our estimate, not a measurement. Every assumption is in the section below, so you can swap in your own.

One model call of an agent: a large context read from the cache, a small new part, a short answer; each part has its own price per million tokens One model call, repeated 30 times per task Read from the cache45,000 tokens of old context, cheapest price New input5,000 Output1,000, dearest tokens × price per million tokens, added up over every call of the task dollars per task, then per month
The agent sends its whole context on every call. The cache makes the repeated part cheap, but it never makes it free.

How tokens turn into dollars

A token is a piece of text, a few characters long. Providers sell them by the million and charge four different rates:

  • Input: text the model reads for the first time.
  • Cache write: the same text, stored so the next call can reuse it.
  • Cache read: stored text read again. This is the cheap one.
  • Output: text the model writes, thinking included. This is the dear one.

An agent works in a loop: it reads files, runs a command, looks at the result, decides again. Every turn of the loop is one model call, and every call carries the whole conversation so far. That is why input and cache reads, not the answers, make most of the tokens.

OpenRouter sells the same models through one key: inference is billed at the provider's list price. It adds 5.5% on credit purchases on the Standard plan, 8% on Business, so count about 5.5 percent on top.

What one task costs

We needed a task that fits most coding agents. Ours is a bug fix or a small feature: one coding task: the agent makes 30 model calls. Each call carries about 50,000 tokens of context; 45,000 are read from the cache, 5,000 are new and get written to it, and the model writes 1,000 tokens. That is 1.53 million tokens per task, and the same count for every model below.

ModelOne task, with cacheOne task, no cache
Claude Haiku 5.5$0.047$0.17
Claude Sonnet 5.5$0.81$3.30
Claude Opus 5.5$1.62$6.60
Claude Fable 5.1$3.71$16.50
GPT-6 Luna$0.047$0.17
GPT-6.1 Sol$0.81$3.30
GPT-6 Astra$4.73$16.50
Our estimate. With cache: 30 calls × (45,000 cache-read + 5,000 cache-write + 1,000 output tokens) at the prices above. No cache: the same 50,000 input tokens at the plain input price.

Take Claude Sonnet 5.5: 1.35 million cache-read tokens cost $0.135, 150,000 cache-write tokens $0.375, and 30,000 output tokens $0.30. The total is $0.81. Without the cache the same task costs $3.30, about four times more.

What a month costs

Multiply by how much the agent works. Three profiles: light is 20 tasks a month: a side project on weekends; regular is 200 tasks a month: about ten on every working day, which is 306 million tokens; heavy is 1,000 tasks a month: several agents in parallel.

Dollars a month, rounded. Our estimate: tasks a month × the cost of one task.

The spread is wide for one reason: a model's price class. The same work costs a few dollars on a small model and hundreds on a top one. Small models fit routine steps. Hard bugs and design work are where the larger ones earn their price, and that is a choice for your own tests, not for this table.

Where the bill grows

  • Long sessions. Context grows with every turn, and each call reads all of it again.
  • Thinking. Reasoning counts as output, the dearest rate. We put 1,000 output tokens per call; a model that thinks hard writes more.
  • Cache misses. A cache entry expires after a short time: five minutes for the cache write priced on Anthropic's page. If the agent waits for you longer, the next call pays for writing the context again.
  • Parallel agents. Ten agents in one hour cost ten times one agent, not less.
  • Retries. A task that fails and starts over is paid twice.

Ways to pay less

Cuts the bill

  • Prompt caching, switched on and kept warm. It is the four-times gap in the table above.
  • A smaller model for routine steps. Search, rename, run the tests.
  • Batch mode for work that can wait. Anthropic's Batch API takes 50% off input and output tokens for work that can wait.
  • A fresh session per task. Short context is cheap context.

Looks cheaper, is not always

  • A cheap model that needs three tries. Judge the cost of a finished task, not of a call.
  • Cutting the context by hand. The agent loses the file it needed and reads it again.
  • A flat subscription for heavy use. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan and shares the usage limits of the plan. You work inside the limits of the plan.

Uno AI: time, not tokens

On Uno you do not count tokens. With Uno AI you pay for the time the agent works, and only minutes the AI works count; ten chats in the same minute count as one. Small with Uno AI is $20 a month with 40 hours; Plus with Uno AI is $50 with 100. Prefer your own account? You can: sign in with your Claude or ChatGPT subscription; Claude Code and Codex use it.

What this page does not say

  • The usage is our estimate. Your agent can use a third of this or three times more. Count your own calls for a week before you budget.
  • The token count is the same for every model. In practice it differs: Anthropic says Claude 4.7 and later models make about 30 percent more tokens from the same text, so Claude bills may come out higher than the table.
  • It covers model tokens only. Search tools, paid APIs your agent calls, the server and taxes are extra.
  • Uno AI is not unlimited on Small and Plus: after the hours it stops. Only Max with Uno AI has no end. We do not claim that a given number of hours equals a given number of tokens.
  • Prices change. The table is dated 16 October 2026; check the provider pages before you decide.

The tokens are one part of the bill. The agent also needs a place to run: a Linux computer with root that sleeps when idle and wakes on the first request.

Questions

What is a token?
A piece of text, roughly three to four letters of English. A page of text is a few hundred tokens. Providers count tokens in and out, and charge per million.
Why is cache read so much cheaper?
The provider has already processed that text once and keeps the result for a few minutes. Reading it back costs a tenth of the input price on most models, and less on some.
Is a subscription cheaper than the API?
For steady daily use, often yes, because you pay a flat price. In return you accept plan limits. The API has no limit but your budget, and it bills every token.
Does OpenRouter cost more?
The model prices are the same as the provider's list. OpenRouter charges a fee when you buy credits: 5.5% on credit purchases on the Standard plan, 8% on Business.
Which model should I start with?
Start with a mid-range model, watch what it costs on three real tasks, then try a smaller one for the easy steps. The numbers on this page tell you what to expect, not which model is better.
