How domains and DNS work

A domain is a name you rent, such as mycafe.com. DNS is the system that turns that name into the IP address of a server, so a browser knows where to go. You rent the name from a registrar, and you tell DNS where it points by adding records.

A browser asks a resolver for mycafe.com; the resolver asks the name servers and returns an IP address; the browser connects to that address Browserwants mycafe.com Resolveryour provider's server Name servershold your records 1. where is it? 2. asks 3. 203.0.113.10 4. 203.0.113.10 5. The browser connects to 203.0.113.10 the server at that address sends the page. The resolver remembers the answer for a while.
A lookup takes milliseconds. The resolver keeps the answer, so most visits skip steps 2 and 3.

Records you will set

Your DNS host stores a list of records for the domain. Each one says "this name means that". Five types cover almost everything.

TypeSaysExample
Aname → IPv4 addressmycafe.com → 203.0.113.10
AAAAname → IPv6 addressmycafe.com → 2001:db8::10
CNAMEname → another namewww.mycafe.com → mycafe.example.net
TXTfree text, often to prove ownership_verify → abc123
MXwhere the domain's mail goesmycafe.com → mail.example.net
ask DNS yourself
$ dig +short A mycafe.com
203.0.113.10
$ dig +short CNAME www.mycafe.com
mycafe.example.net.
$ dig +short TXT _verify.mycafe.com
"abc123"

A root domain like mycafe.com cannot hold a CNAME, so use a subdomain such as www.mycafe.com. That is a rule of DNS, not of one host. An A record, or an ALIAS record at hosts that offer it, covers the root.

Why a change takes time

Every record has a TTL, a number of seconds that resolvers may keep the answer. After you edit a record, resolvers that cached the old one keep serving it until their TTL runs out. This is what people call propagation. Nothing spreads; old copies expire.

Before a move, lower the TTL a day ahead. After the move, raise it again. Run dig to see what the world sees now, not what your registrar's page says.

Do you need your own domain?

Get a domain when

  • Customers will type your name. A shop, a studio, a product.
  • You want email at your name. [email protected] needs MX records.
  • You may change hosts. The name stays yours; only the records move.

Skip it when

  • It is a draft or a test. A free address from the host is enough.
  • A bot has no web page. Nobody types its address.

Domains in Uno

A site you publish starts at a free address on uno4.me. A site on your own name: add a CNAME record from your subdomain to your site's uno4.me address, then connect it on the site's Custom domain tab. An app on a computer: to use your own domain you add two records at your registrar: a TXT record that proves you own it and a CNAME to cname.uno4.dev; after the records are visible, Uno issues the certificate by itself; the API reports the state: pending, issuing, active. On a computer, a root domain can take longer to show up than a www subdomain.

Questions

Is a domain the same as hosting?
No. The domain is the name; hosting is the computer that serves the page. DNS connects the two, so you can buy them from different companies.
Who runs my DNS?
Whoever you set as the name servers for the domain: your registrar by default, or a separate DNS host. Edit records in one place only.
Why does my site work for me but not for a friend?
Your resolver and theirs may hold different cached answers until the TTL runs out. Wait it out, or check with dig against a public resolver.
Do I need the www?
No, but pick one form and send the other to it. A www name can use a CNAME, which makes it the easy one to point at a host.
