What is a VPS

A VPS, or virtual private server, is a slice of a physical server that behaves like your own computer: its own operating system, root access and an address on the internet. You rent the slice by the month and run whatever you want on it, without buying hardware.

One physical server split by a hypervisor into several virtual private servers Physical server processors, memory, disks, network card Hypervisor splits the hardware and keeps the slices apart VPS 1Ubuntu · 2 vCPU · 4 GB a shop's backend VPS 2 — yoursDebian · 1 vCPU · 1 GB your Telegram bot VPS 3Ubuntu · 4 vCPU · 8 GB a team's CI runner VPS 4Alpine · 1 vCPU · 2 GB a VPN
Each VPS sees only its own slice. To its owner it looks like a whole computer.

How it works

A hosting company runs big servers. A program called a hypervisor cuts each one into virtual machines and gives every virtual machine a share of the processors, a fixed amount of memory and its own disk.

You get one of those machines. You connect over SSH, install software, open ports and run programs around the clock. Other customers on the same server cannot see your files, and you cannot see theirs.

your laptop → your VPS
$ ssh [email protected]
Welcome to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
root@vps:~# docker run -d -p 80:80 my-app
a3f9c1… started
root@vps:~# curl -s localhost | head -1
<h1>My app is online</h1>

The "private" part is about control, not hardware: you are root on your slice, but the physical server is shared. Most VPS plans share processor cores too, which is why the same "2 vCPU" can be fast at one provider and slow at another.

Do you need one?

Take a VPS when

  • Something must answer all the time. A Telegram bot, an API, a game server, a VPN.
  • You need root. Your own database, Docker, system packages, a firewall.
  • An AI agent needs a place to work. Claude Code or Codex on a server keeps going when your laptop is closed.

Skip it when

  • It is a static site. Static hosting is free and needs no server care.
  • You only collect form answers. A form service does it without a backend.
  • Code runs a few seconds a day. Serverless costs less than a server that waits all month.

The trade-off: a VPS gives you full control, and with it the chores. Updates, backups and security are yours to handle, unless someone does them for you.

What a VPS on Uno adds

Same root and the same Linux as any VPS. Here is what comes with it.

It sleeps when idle and keeps its memory

With nothing to do for 10 minutes it falls asleep with every program still in memory. A visitor, a bot message or you wake it. Every hour asleep earns you a boost.

An AI agent sets it up for you

Tell Uno what you need in a chat. It installs, configures and starts it on your computer, and you watch every command it runs. Or bring Claude Code or Codex with your own subscription.

Fast where it counts

NVMe disks and DDR5 with error correction (ECC). On 16 vCPU an Uno computer scores like a MacBook Air M4 in Geekbench 6: a second MacBook in the cloud for $70 a month.

A clean address of your own

Traffic can leave through a static address of a regular internet provider in one of 8 countries, used only by your account. Fewer captchas for your agent's browser.

Nothing happens unseen

Every time Uno itself touches your computer, it goes to your access log: who, when and why.

Questions

Is a VPS the same as a virtual machine?
Almost. Every VPS is a virtual machine; "VPS" is the name hosting companies use when they rent one out with an address on the internet.
What is the difference between a VPS and a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is a whole physical machine for you alone. A VPS is a slice of one. A VPS costs a fraction of the price and is enough for most bots, sites and agents.
How much memory does a small project need?
A Telegram bot or a small API runs in 1 GB. An AI agent that builds code wants 4 GB or more, because compilers and package managers are hungry.
Do I have to know Linux?
On a classic VPS, yes: you set up everything over SSH. On Uno you can ask an AI agent to do it for you and watch what it runs.

A VPS that an agent can run for you

Root, Docker, NVMe. Sleeps when idle, keeps its memory. Small is $5 a month.
